The first ever clinical trial of Viagra has been halted after the maker of the drug complained to regulators that it made an "unusually good product" and that the company had a "problem" with the product.
Cialis and Levitra will be made in the UK, but it is hoped the delay will help Pfizer to avoid legal action if they decide to switch from Viagra to Cialis.
Viagra was approved in 1998 and Cialis in 2003.
It is the first clinical trial for a drug to prevent erectile dysfunction, which is a problem in men over 40.
A spokesman for the company said the company would continue to sell the drug in the UK until at least late 2017.
The trial is set to run for about two weeks, and it is expected to give Pfizer reasons to make a switch.
The trial will be the first to see how long it will take a drug to work in the short term and whether any of the side effects are serious enough to warrant a change of treatment.
Dr Berkeley Phillips, Pfizer's head of drug development, said: "This is an important first step in ensuring that a product is safe for patients and clinicians."
The trial is based on clinical data from three studies of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
A total of 6,700 patients will be treated for erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are all PDE-5 inhibitors, as are Viagra Connect, a generic equivalent of Cialis and Cialis Together.There were 11,000 deaths associated with the PDE-5 inhibitors, including 1,700 people from the UK who had been treated for their erectile dysfunction.
Dr Phillips said: "This is an important first step in ensuring that a product is safe for patients and clinicians."
He added: "The safety profile of sildenafil is similar to that of other PDE5 inhibitors, which are available as oral tablets.
"We hope that the trial will give patients hope for the benefit of sildenafil, which has been used for a long time, but also give them the opportunity to make informed decisions about their treatment."
Viagra Connect has been on the market since 1998 and the generic equivalent of Cialis was launched in 2003.
It is hoped that the delay will help Pfizer to avoid legal action if they decide to switch from Viagra to Cialis.
The trial is the first of a long list of drug side effects after improvement in erections and sexual dysfunction, including headaches and vision changes.
The other side effects are serious enough to require a change of treatment.
Other side effects include nasal congestion, nasal polyps, facial flushing and nasal bleeding.
A spokesman for Pfizer said: "We are aware of the potential side effects and will vigorously challenge the continued review of these potential causes of our patients' symptoms.
"We would also like to stress that patients should be made aware of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise programme, and to discuss any concerns they may have with the company's current product."
The company also said that it was reviewing the safety and efficacy of its Cialis and Levitra.
The trial is the first of a long list of drugs to be made available in the UK before late 2017.
Dr Andrew McCullough, director of research at the Centre for Drug Evaluation of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, said: "These are very important drugs for patients, and we are in the process of developing a new indication for them.
"It is not uncommon for patients to switch from one medication to another, and we expect this to be the first of a long list of drugs that have been made available.
"The decision to make these drugs available will be made in line with the patient's wishes and will be reviewed at a public and regulatory basis."
A Pfizer spokesman said: "We are working with pharmaceutical companies to ensure the safety and efficacy of these drugs and to ensure regulatory compliance with all relevant guidelines.

Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
